Name change after marriage: the records, in dependency order
A shorter route than a general name change, because the marriage certificate is itself the anchor document — and a longer list of records, whose order decides whether you do the work once or twice.

Before the sequence: two questions worth answering
Nothing in Indian law requires you to change your name on marriage. Deciding deliberately — and deciding the exact final form — is what makes the rest of this a single pass rather than two.
Have you decided to change your name?
- No, I am keeping my name
There is nothing to do. A marriage does not alter your name by operation of law.
Your documents continue to read as they always have, and no institution is entitled to insist otherwise. Do still get several certified copies of the marriage certificate — it is a document you will be asked for repeatedly, for joint accounts, nominations and visas.
- Yes — I am taking my spouse’s surname
Have you decided the exact final form, character by character?
- Yes — including initials, spacing and the order of the parts
Start the sequence. Marriage certificate, Aadhaar, PAN, then everything else.
Write the string down and use it identically everywhere. Institutions match on strings, and a difference of one expanded initial between Aadhaar and a bank is enough to produce a mismatch.
- Not exactly — I know roughly what I want
Settle it first. This is the decision the whole sequence depends on.
Whether an initial is expanded, whether there is a space or a full stop after it, which part comes first, and how it renders in the regional script as well as in English. UIDAI limits how many times a name may be updated, so an interim version costs you one you cannot get back.
Why the Aadhaar update is the one to be careful with →
- Yes — including initials, spacing and the order of the parts
- I want to add my spouse’s surname without dropping my own
Perfectly normal. The sequence is identical.
What matters is not which form you choose but that it is applied consistently to every record. A partial or inconsistent change is what causes the problems this cluster exists to solve.
- I am changing my name for a reason unconnected with the marriage
Different route — the marriage certificate will not explain it.
A change unconnected with the marriage needs the general chain: affidavit, newspaper publication, gazette notification. The marriage certificate is an anchor only for a change the marriage actually accounts for.
The general name-change chain →
If you are going to change, change everything. If you are not, change nothing. The half-completed version — some records updated and some not — is the one that causes difficulty years later.
Most of the documents on this page are issued by a State government, not by the Union. The Act behind a document is usually central — the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, for instance — but the forms, the fees, the processing times, the portal and the office you actually go to are fixed by each State under its own rules. That means there is no single national fee or timeline for a domicile certificate, an income certificate or a legal heir certificate, and any page that quotes you one has invented it. We give you the statutory framework, which is the same everywhere, and the name of the office and portal for your State, which is where the current fee is published. Where a figure is set by a central authority — UIDAI, the Department of Publication, Passport Seva — it is stated as such and attributed.
Changing your name after marriage is a shorter route than a general name change, because the marriage certificate is itself an anchor document: it explains, on official paper, why the name changed. Many institutions will act on the marriage certificate alone, and a gazette notification — which is effectively mandatory for a general change — is often not required. What replaces the difficulty of proving the change is the difficulty of sequencing a long list of records. The marriage certificate has to come first. Then Aadhaar and PAN, because almost everything else verifies against them. Then the passport, then banks and financial accounts, then insurance, employer and provident fund, then property records, education records and licences. Nothing in Indian law obliges you to change your name on marriage at all — and where you do, doing the records in the right order is the whole of the work.
Key takeaways
- You are not required to change your name. There is no legal obligation, and a great many people do not. Everything on this page applies only if you have decided to.
- The marriage certificate is the anchor document, which is why this route is shorter. It explains the change on official paper, so many institutions do not require a gazette notification.
- Get the marriage certificate first, and get several certified copies. Every institution keeps the copy you give it, exactly as with a death certificate.
- Aadhaar and PAN come first among the records, and they must end up identical character for character — almost everything else verifies against one or both of them.
- Pull education records forward rather than leaving them to the end. Several boards and universities impose a time limit on a name change measured from the award, and it is the only item on the list that can expire.
The sequence: what has to come first, and what can happen at once
A much shorter spine than a general name change, because the marriage certificate does the work the gazette would otherwise have to do. The list underneath is the same, and getting its first three items in order is what stops the exercise happening twice.
The spine — in this order, because everything else verifies against these
- 1
The marriage certificate
Order six or more copies
Registered under the statute that governs the marriage, and issued by the registrar for the area. Order several certified copies at registration — every institution keeps the one you hand over. Check both names, the parents’ names, and the date and place before you leave.
You now hold: The anchor document that explains the change on official paper
- 2
Aadhaar
UIDAI’s requirements for a post-marriage update are not the same as for a general change. Make the update once, to the exact final form of the name — the number of name updates is limited over a lifetime.
You now hold: The record most other institutions will verify your new name against
Aadhaar name update, in detail → - 3
PAN
Character for character identical to the Aadhaar — the same expansion of initials, the same spacing, the same order of the parts. Equivalent is not enough, because institutions match on strings.
You now hold: A second identity record, identical to the first
The branch point
Everything below hangs off those three. A bank or an employer updated before Aadhaar has recorded a change verified against a document that is about to change — which means doing it a second time.
Then these, in any order — except education records and professional registrations, which should be pulled forward
Passport
Wants to see: A re-issue application with the marriage certificate.
The requirements for a change on marriage differ from those for a general change. Read Passport Seva’s own page rather than assuming.
Education records
Wants to see: The institution’s own name-change procedure.
Pull this forward. Several boards and universities decline a change after a stated period from the award — the only item on this list that can expire.
Professional registration
Wants to see: The council or body’s own process.
Frequently overlooked, and it matters for medicine, law, engineering, accountancy and anything else registrable. Ask about time limits here too.
Bank accounts and demat
Wants to see: The change-of-particulars form, the marriage certificate, and updated Aadhaar and PAN.
Every bank, every branch, each demat account and each folio separately. The dormant account from a first job is the one people forget.
Insurance policies
Wants to see: The insurer’s endorsement process with the marriage certificate.
A policy in the former name stays valid. The endorsement is for the paperwork at claim time.
Employer and provident fund
Wants to see: The employer’s process and the provident fund’s change procedure.
The provident fund record must match the bank account and the Aadhaar, or a withdrawal stalls years later at the worst moment.
Property records
Wants to see: The marriage certificate alongside the title documents.
A deed in your former name is not invalidated. The certificate is the evidentiary link and that is all that is required.
Driving licence, voter roll, ration card, gas connection
Wants to see: Each issuing authority’s own change process.
Easy to forget entirely. Put them on the list at the start.
The spine is three steps and the list is nine. An hour spent writing the list out, and two emails asking about time limits, is what turns this into a single pass.
Nothing in Indian law requires a change of name on marriage. Everything above applies only if you have decided to make one — and if you have, doing every record rather than some is what avoids the mismatch problem entirely.
First: nothing requires you to do this
It is worth saying plainly, because a page about how to change your name after marriage can read as though the change were compulsory. It is not. No Indian statute requires a person to take a spouse’s name on marriage, and a very large number of people do not. A marriage does not alter your name by operation of law, and keeping the name you have needs no process, no document and no explanation.
There is a related point that is more practically useful. Where a name is not changed, no downstream work arises at all — no Aadhaar update, no bank forms, no passport re-issue, no question years later about why a degree certificate reads differently from a bank account. That is not an argument for one choice or the other; it is simply the cost side of the decision, and it is worth being aware of before starting.
Where the decision is to change, the rest of this page is about doing it once rather than twice.
Adding a spouse’s surname while keeping your own, or changing your name on some records and not others, are both things people do. The second creates the problem this cluster exists to solve — records that disagree — so if you are going to change, change everything, and if you are not, change nothing. The half-completed version is the one that causes difficulty years later.
Why this route is shorter than a general name change
The general name-change chain — affidavit, newspaper publication, gazette notification — exists to manufacture evidence that does not otherwise exist. Where a person decides to be known by a name none of their documents has ever carried, nothing links the old identity to the new one, and the chain creates that link.
A marriage is different, because a document already exists that explains the change. The marriage certificate is issued by a registrar, records both parties by name, and is exactly the kind of official, dated, verifiable record that institutions want. It does the job the gazette notification would otherwise have to do.
Which is why many institutions accept a marriage certificate for a post-marriage name change without requiring a gazette. Not all of them do — practice differs, and some authorities have their own requirements — so the sensible approach is to ask before assembling anything, exactly as with the police clearance certificate.
Where an institution does require more, the fallback is the same chain: an affidavit, and where necessary a gazette notification. That is a longer route, and it is the exception rather than the rule for a post-marriage change.
| After marriage | A general change of name | |
|---|---|---|
| What explains the change | The marriage certificate — an official document that already exists. | Nothing, until the chain creates it. |
| Is a gazette notification needed? | Often not. Many institutions accept the marriage certificate alone. Ask before assuming. | In practice yes, because most significant institutions ask for it. |
| Is an affidavit needed? | Sometimes, where an institution asks for one alongside the certificate. | Always — it is the first link in the chain. |
| Newspaper publication? | Not usually. | Yes, as the input to the gazette application. |
| What has to come first | The marriage certificate, with several certified copies. | The affidavit, then the newspapers, then the gazette. |
| What the difficulty actually is | Sequencing a long list of records so that each is done once. | Producing the evidence, and then sequencing the same list. |
The downstream list is identical in both cases. What differs is the anchor document at the head of it, and how much work that anchor takes to obtain.
The order to do the records in
This is the substance of the page. The list is long, most of it can be done in parallel, and two items have to come first for reasons that are not obvious.
The marriage certificate is first because everything else depends on it. Get it, and get several certified copies — every institution keeps the copy you hand over, and ordering more later means going back to the registrar.
Aadhaar and PAN come next, before anything else, because a great many institutions do not verify your identity against your documents directly. They verify against Aadhaar, or PAN, or both. A bank asked to change a name will check the new name against the Aadhaar it holds, and if that Aadhaar still carries the old name the change either fails or records something that will not match later.
The passport comes third, because it is both a downstream document in its own right and an identity document many institutions rely on.
After that the order barely matters, with one exception: education records, which should be pulled forward. Several boards and universities impose a time limit on a name change measured from the award of the qualification, and it is the only item on the list that can expire while you are working through the others.
- 1The marriage certificate, with several certified copies. Everything else depends on it.
- 2Aadhaar, because most institutions verify against it. UIDAI limits how many times a name may be updated, so make the change once, to the final form.
- 3PAN, made identical to the Aadhaar character for character — the same expansion of initials, the same spacing, the same order of the parts.
- 4The passport, by way of re-issue. Requirements for a change on marriage differ from those for a general change, so read Passport Seva’s own page rather than assuming.
- 5Education records — pulled forward out of order, because of the time limits several institutions impose.
- 6Bank accounts, including dormant ones, and every demat account and mutual fund folio. Make the list before you start; the forgotten accounts are the dormant ones.
- 7Insurance policies, by endorsement. A policy in the old name remains valid; the endorsement keeps the paperwork clean for a claim.
- 8The employer’s records and the provident fund account, which must match the bank account and the Aadhaar or a withdrawal stalls years later.
- 9Property records, the driving licence, the voter roll, the ration card and the gas connection.
Sit down once and write out every account, policy, folio, record and licence you hold. Almost nobody can do this from memory, and the items people forget — a dormant account from a first job, an old insurance policy, a professional registration — are exactly the ones that surface at an inconvenient moment years later. The list takes an hour and it is what turns a scattered exercise into a finite one.
Getting the marriage certificate, and why several copies
A marriage is registered under the statute that governs it — the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 for a Hindu marriage, the Special Marriage Act, 1954 for a civil marriage or an inter-faith one, and the corresponding statutes for other personal laws — and the certificate is issued by the registrar for the area.
The certificate names both parties, records the date and place of the marriage, and is signed and issued by an official registrar. That combination is what makes it work as an anchor document: it is official, it is dated, it names both the old and the new context, and an institution can verify it independently.
Order several certified copies at the point of registration. This is the same lesson as the death certificate and for the same reason: every institution keeps the copy you give it, and the number of institutions on the list above is large. Ordering more later means going back to the registrar, paying the fee again and waiting again — and doing that in the middle of a sequence that is already waiting on you.
Check every particular on the certificate before you leave: both names, spelt exactly as they appear on the parties’ other documents, the parents’ names, and the date and place. A marriage certificate that spells a name differently from the Aadhaar it will be used to change is a certificate that will cause a query at every step.
What each record wants, and what catches people out
The list is long and the individual steps are mostly routine. What follows is the detail that is not obvious, record by record.
| Record | What it wants | What catches people out |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar | The marriage certificate. UIDAI’s requirements for a post-marriage update differ from those for a general change. | The lifetime limit on name updates. Make the change once, to the exact final form, and check UIDAI’s current position before applying. |
| PAN | A change application with the marriage certificate. | PAN and Aadhaar must end up identical, character for character. Equivalent is not enough — institutions match on strings. |
| Passport | A re-issue application. The requirements for a change on marriage are not the same as for a general change. | Read Passport Seva’s own page for the current position. Assuming the general requirements apply is the common error here. |
| Bank accounts and demat | The bank’s change-of-particulars form, the marriage certificate, and updated Aadhaar and PAN. | Every bank, every branch and each demat account separately — and the dormant account from a first job that nobody remembers. |
| Insurance policies | The insurer’s endorsement process, with the marriage certificate. | A policy in the old name stays valid. The endorsement is for the paperwork at claim time, and it is worth doing for that reason. |
| Employer and provident fund | The employer’s process, and the provident fund’s own change procedure. | The provident fund record has to match the bank account and the Aadhaar, or a withdrawal stalls years later — at the worst possible moment. |
| Education records | The institution’s own name-change procedure, which may want the marriage certificate or more. | Time limits. Several boards and universities decline a change after a stated period from the award. Ask early; this is the only item that expires. |
| Property records | The marriage certificate alongside the title documents. | A deed in your former name is not invalidated. The certificate is the evidentiary link, and that is all that is required. |
| Driving licence, voter roll, ration card, gas connection | Each issuing authority’s own change process. | Easy to forget entirely. Put them on the list at the start so they are not left out. |
| Professional registration | The council or body’s own process. | Frequently overlooked, and it matters for anyone whose qualification is registrable — medicine, law, engineering, accountancy. |
An ordering of the four against one another, from how these matters present. It is not a measurement. The top two are the ones that cannot be undone by doing more work, which is what makes them worth planning around.
If you decide not to change your name
There is nothing to do, and that is worth stating because people ask.
A marriage does not alter your name by operation of law. Your documents continue to read as they always have, and no institution is entitled to insist otherwise. You may be asked for a marriage certificate for other purposes — a spouse visa, a joint account, an insurance nomination, a passport that records a spouse’s name — and those are separate matters from your own name.
The one situation worth planning for is a document that names a spouse. A passport can record a spouse’s name, and some institutions ask for a marriage certificate before recording a spouse as a nominee or a dependant. Those are additions rather than changes, and they need the certificate rather than any of the process on this page.
And the practical point that applies either way: get several certified copies of the marriage certificate at registration. Whether or not you change your name, it is a document you will be asked for repeatedly.
Worked examples
Example 1: The order that made it one pass
- The decision
- To take the spouse’s surname
- Records held
- Aadhaar, PAN, passport, four bank accounts, two policies, a degree, a professional registration
- The approach
- The list first, then the sequence
- 1.Marriage certificate, with six certified copies ordered at registration. Every particular checked at the counter against both parties’ Aadhaar.
- 2.The list written out in one sitting: every account including a dormant one from a first job, both policies, the employer and provident fund, the degree, the professional registration, the licence, the voter roll and the gas connection.
- 3.The professional body and the university asked, by email, about their own name-change procedures and any time limit. Both answered within a week, and one had a limit.
- 4.Aadhaar updated first, to the exact final form of the name — decided in advance, character by character.
- 5.PAN brought into line, identical to the Aadhaar. Then the passport re-issue.
- 6.Then everything else in parallel, with the university and the professional body dealt with early because of the time limit.
Every record changed once. The hour spent on the list and the two emails about time limits are what made the difference — not any individual application.
Example 2: The bank updated too early
- What was done first
- The main bank account, on the marriage certificate alone
- What had not been done
- Aadhaar
- What happened
- The Aadhaar update, made afterwards, used a slightly different form of the name
- 1.The bank recorded the new name and verified it against the Aadhaar it held, which still carried the old name — so its record was based on documents that were about to change.
- 2.The Aadhaar update that followed rendered the name slightly differently: one initial expanded where the bank’s record had not expanded it.
- 3.Institutions match on strings. A difference of that kind is enough to produce a mismatch at the next verification.
- 4.The bank record had to be changed a second time, this time against the updated Aadhaar.
- 5.The correct sequence would have been Aadhaar first, PAN second, and only then the bank — and the exact final form of the name decided before any of them.
The same change made twice, for want of an order. Aadhaar and PAN first is not a preference; it is what everything downstream verifies against.
Example 3: The degree certificate that could not be changed
- The change
- Completed across identity documents, banks and insurance
- Left until last
- The university degree certificate
- When it was addressed
- Two years after the marriage
- 1.The university’s own name-change procedure imposed a time limit measured from the award of the qualification, and it had passed.
- 2.The certificate stays in the former name, which is not fatal but is permanent.
- 3.Every employment verification afterwards needs the marriage certificate produced alongside the degree, which works and is less convenient than a clean set of documents.
- 4.The fix, had it been known, cost one email at the start: ask the institution about its rule before beginning the downstream phase rather than after finishing it.
- 5.The same question is worth asking of any professional registration body, for the same reason.
Education records are the only item on the list that can expire. Pull them forward, and ask about the rule before you need the answer.

What goes wrong, and which of it cannot be fixed afterwards
Most of this is ordinary sequencing. Two items on the list are different, because no amount of later effort undoes them — a wasted Aadhaar update, and an expired institutional window.

The list to write out before you start
- 1Every bank account, including dormant ones and any from a previous employer, with the branch and account number.
- 2Every demat account and mutual fund folio.
- 3Every insurance policy, with the policy number and insurer.
- 4Every education record — school leaving certificate, degree, diploma — and, for each institution, its own rule about name changes and any time limit.
- 5Any professional registration, and the same question about time limits.
- 6The employer’s records and the provident fund account number.
- 7Property records, the driving licence, the voter roll, the ration card and the gas connection.
- 8Then order it: marriage certificate, Aadhaar, PAN, passport — and education records and professional registrations pulled forward out of the rest.
Two things on this page cannot be undone by doing more work later: a wasted Aadhaar update and an expired institutional window. Both are prevented by decisions made before the first application.
