iGuideline Summary
The Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026 — in force from 1 July 2026, replacing the 2021 scheme — provides free resolution of complaints against banks, NBFCs, credit card issuers and payment system operators. File online at cms.rbi.org.in once the bank's response period has expired or it has given an unsatisfactory reply, and within 90 days of that point. The Ombudsman can award up to ₹30 lakh for consequential loss and a further ₹3 lakh for loss of time, expenses and harassment. Confirm the current scheme text at rbi.org.in.
The Ombudsman will not take a complaint that is premature or out of time, so check both before you draft:
- Ombudsman eligibility checker — the thirty-day wait after complaining to the bank, and the filing window, which is shorter than most guides say
- Aadhaar and PAN problems — where the bank issue is really a KYC or name-mismatch problem, fixing that comes first
- Consumer commission instead — the Ombudsman cannot award for everything, and a consumer complaint often costs nothing to file
