EPF Complaint — EPFiGMS Filing, UAN Issues and Escalation
Most PF grievances are not EPFO’s doing at all — they are the employer failing to deposit, to update, or to attest. Knowing which it is decides whether your complaint goes anywhere.
- Who to contact first
- EPFO through EPFiGMS — but check first whether the failure is EPFO’s or your employer’s, because most are the employer’s.
- How to reach them
- File at epfigms.gov.in against your UAN. You receive a registration number for tracking.
- How long to wait
- EPFO does not publish one redress period across grievance types. Note the registration number and date.
- If they ignore you
- Escalate to the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner for your office, and file on CPGRAMS in parallel for a 21-day norm.

A claim stuck because the exit date was never marked, KYC never attested, or contributions never deposited is not something EPFO can fix on its own — the employer has to act, and a grievance filed against EPFO for an employer’s omission comes straight back. Check the passbook for missing months, the UAN for KYC status and the service history for the exit date first. Then you know whether to chase HR or file on EPFiGMS, and the complaint you write is the right one.

The escalation ladder, level by level
Work through these in order. Every forum above asks what you did below, and skipping a rung is the commonest reason a complaint is sent back.
- 1Diagnose firstWait Immediate
Work out whose failure it is — the employer’s or EPFO’s.
Check the passbook for missing contributions, the UAN for KYC status, and the service history for an unmarked exit date. Employer-side problems need the employer to act.
- 2Employer — HR / payrollWait Employer-specific

How the process runs
- 1Diagnose from your own records
Passbook for missing contributions, UAN for KYC status, service history for the exit date. That tells you whose failure it is.
then: if it is employer-side - 2Ask the employer in writing
Missing deposits, KYC attestation and exit-date marking all require the employer to act. Keep the written request.
then: if it is EPFO-side, or the employer will not act - 3File on EPFiGMS
At epfigms.gov.in against your UAN, with the claim ID and the rejection reason where a claim was refused. Keep the registration number.
then: if nothing moves - 4Regional Provident Fund Commissioner, and CPGRAMS
CPGRAMS in parallel attaches a 21-day norm and a 30-day appeal the EPFO route does not publish.
What this system will not take up
Filing one of these wastes the whole period — it is closed on that ground alone.
- Anything pending before a court or tribunal.
- A dispute about salary itself rather than provident fund, which is a labour matter.
- A private retirement product that is not an EPF account.
- A claim for compensation — EPFO corrects the account rather than awarding damages.
What to have ready before you complain
Assemble these first. A complaint that opens with the identifying numbers gets routed; one that opens with how long this has been going on gets a template reply.
- Your UAN and the member ID for each employment.
- The passbook, showing which months are missing.
- The claim ID and the rejection reason, where a claim was rejected.
- Salary slips showing PF deducted from your wages.
- The date of joining and the date of exit for each employer.
- The EPFiGMS registration number, once filed.

Common complaints handled here
Who runs this, and who is above it
Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation, Ministry of Labour and Employment
The single most useful thing to understand about PF complaints is that most of them are not EPFO’s failure. Contributions not deposited, KYC not attested, an exit date not marked — all of these require the employer to act, and a grievance filed against EPFO for an employer’s omission simply comes back. Diagnose before you file.

Frequently asked questions
How do I file an EPF complaint?
On EPFiGMS at epfigms.gov.in, against your UAN, and keep the registration number it gives you. Before filing, check whether the problem is actually EPFO’s: missing contributions, unattested KYC and an unmarked exit date all require your employer to act, and a grievance against EPFO for an employer’s omission simply comes back.
My PF was deducted from my salary but does not show in the passbook. What now?
That is an employer failure to deposit, and it is serious. Gather the salary slips showing the deduction and the passbook months that are missing, ask the employer in writing, and file on EPFiGMS with both attached. The salary slip is the key document: it proves the money was taken from you, which turns a general complaint into a specific allegation.
My withdrawal claim was rejected. How do I find out why?
The rejection reason is recorded against the claim, so start there rather than refiling blindly — repeated rejections for the same unaddressed reason are the commonest PF frustration. Common causes are an unmarked exit date, KYC not attested, a name or date-of-birth mismatch, or a bank account not seeded. Fix the underlying cause, then refile.
How long does an EPFiGMS grievance take?
EPFO does not publish a single redress period covering all grievance types, so note the registration number and the date you filed. Filing the same facts on CPGRAMS in parallel gives you a period you can rely on — 21 days for redress, with an interim reply if longer, and 30 days to appeal after disposal.
My employer will not mark my exit date. Can EPFO do it?
The exit date is ordinarily marked by the employer, which is why an uncooperative or defunct employer blocks so many claims. Raise it in writing with the employer first and keep that record, then file on EPFiGMS setting out the employer’s failure and enclosing your evidence of the last working day. Escalating to the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner is the next step where the employer no longer exists or will not respond.
Is filing an EPF grievance free?
Yes, entirely, and no agent is needed. EPFiGMS, CPGRAMS and escalation to the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner all cost nothing. Be wary of anyone offering to release your PF for a commission — withdrawal is a process you complete yourself through the portal, and no intermediary can accelerate it.
