Speed Post Complaint — Not Delivered, Delayed or Lost
Speed Post is India Post’s premium service, and that matters: it is booked for a stated consideration with a service expectation, which makes a failure easier to pursue than an ordinary postal delay.
- Who to contact first
- The Department of Posts complaint system — not the individual post office that booked it.
- How to reach them
- Register at crm.indiapost.gov.in with the article number from your booking receipt, or call 1800 266 6868. Keep the Complaint ID.
- How long to wait
- India Post’s guidelines refer to resolution in a reasonable time rather than a fixed number of days. Note your own dates.
- If they ignore you
- Escalate to the Public Grievance Division and then the Directorate of Public Grievances in the Cabinet Secretariat, which India Post’s guidelines name. For the value of a lost article, the consumer commission.

Where tracking shows an article as delivered and you did not receive it, the complaint that works asks for a specific document: the delivery proof and the signature taken, and the name of the delivering official. That is something the Department either holds or does not. A complaint that simply reports non-receipt invites a status update; a complaint that asks for the signature invites an investigation.

The escalation ladder, level by level
Work through these in order. Every forum above asks what you did below, and skipping a rung is the commonest reason a complaint is sent back.

How the process runs
- 1Screenshot the tracking first
Capture the last recorded movement with its date, before anything changes on the page.
then: then register - 2Register with the article number
On crm.indiapost.gov.in or 1800 266 6868. Keep the Complaint ID — tracking a complaint uses that, not the article number.
then: if shown delivered but not received - 3Ask for the delivery proof
Request the signature taken and the name of the delivering official. This is the request that moves these complaints.
then: if unresolved - 4Public Grievance Division, then the DPG
011-2303 6397, then the Directorate of Public Grievances at dpg.gov.in.
then: for the value of the article - 5Consumer commission
Speed Post is booked for consideration, so loss or serious delay is deficiency in service. Two years from the cause of action.
What this system will not take up
Filing one of these wastes the whole period — it is closed on that ground alone.
- Private courier consignments — Blue Dart, DTDC and the rest are not the Department of Posts.
- India Post Payments Bank matters, which are a separate entity on 155299.
- Anything pending before a court.
- A claim for compensation, which the departmental system does not award.
What to have ready before you complain
Assemble these first. A complaint that opens with the identifying numbers gets routed; one that opens with how long this has been going on gets a template reply.
- The article number from the booking receipt — without it nothing can be traced.
- The booking receipt itself, showing the date, office and amount paid.
- A screenshot of Track and Trace showing the last recorded movement, taken before you complain.
- The addressee’s name and full address as written on the article.
- The declared value and insurance receipt, for an insured article.
- The Complaint ID issued when you registered, with its date.

Common complaints handled here
Who runs this, and who is above it
Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications
Speed Post sits inside the same complaint machinery as the rest of India Post, and there is no sector regulator above the Department. What distinguishes a Speed Post complaint is the consideration paid for a premium, tracked service — which makes the consumer commission route materially stronger than it is for ordinary post.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Speed Post complaint number?
Speed Post uses India Post’s customer care line, 1800 266 6868, published as available 8:00am to 8:00pm with IVRS around the clock. Complaints can also be registered in writing on the India Post CRM at crm.indiapost.gov.in, which is the better route because the article number and any documents travel with the complaint and you receive a Complaint ID.
My Speed Post shows delivered but I never received it. What now?
Screenshot the tracking page showing the delivery entry and its date, then register a complaint asking for two specific things: the delivery proof including the signature taken, and the name of the delivering official. That is a document the Department either has or does not, which is far harder to answer with a holding reply than a general report that the article did not arrive.
Can I claim the value of a lost Speed Post article?
Not through the departmental complaint system, which traces and explains rather than paying. Compensation is a consumer commission matter, and Speed Post is a strong case there because it is a premium tracked service booked for a stated consideration. Keep the booking receipt: without it the value paid cannot be established, and the claim becomes very difficult.
How long should Speed Post take before I complain?
India Post publishes no fixed redress period, referring instead to resolution in a reasonable time. As a practical matter, if tracking has not moved for several days beyond the expected delivery window, complain — the article number is still fresh, the trail is still traceable, and the date of your complaint becomes the reference point for everything afterwards.
Where do I escalate a Speed Post complaint?
To the Department’s Public Grievance Division on 011-2303 6397, and then to the Directorate of Public Grievances in the Cabinet Secretariat at dpg.gov.in, which India Post’s own guidelines name as the route where a grievance has not been satisfactorily redressed. There is no postal ombudsman — the escalation runs upward inside government instead.
Is complaining about Speed Post free?
Yes. The toll-free number, the CRM portal, tracking and the escalation to the Directorate of Public Grievances are all free, and no lawyer is involved. The only cost that can arise is a consumer commission filing fee, and there is none where the consideration paid is up to ₹5 lakh.

- — Compensation scales for a lost or damaged Speed Post article, which depend on the service and any declared value.
- — The time limit within which a Speed Post complaint must be lodged, which appears on secondary sites but was not on the guidelines page read.
