Aadhaar Complaint — UIDAI 1947, Grievance Filing and Status

Most Aadhaar problems are update or enrolment problems, and the channel that fixes them is not always the one people try first. Here is which route suits which problem, and where to go when the centre says no.

Quick answer
Who to contact first
UIDAI, through its contact centre and grievance facility — not the enrolment centre, which is an operator working under an appointed agency.
How to reach them
Call 1947, email help@uidai.gov.in, or use the Grievance and Feedback facility on uidai.gov.in. Keep the enrolment or update request number (the URN or EID).
How long to wait
UIDAI does not publish a single redress period across grievance types, so note the date you filed and the reference you were given.
If they ignore you
File the same grievance on CPGRAMS at pgportal.gov.in, which gives you a 21-day norm and a 30-day appeal window. Overcharging by an enrolment centre is worth reporting specifically, because the charges are prescribed and the centre is not free to set its own.
The enrolment centre is not UIDAI

The counter you sit at is run by an operator working under an appointed agency, not by UIDAI itself. That is why a centre can refuse a correction, insist on a document that is not required, or ask for more than the prescribed fee — and why none of those refusals is final. Reporting the centre’s conduct to UIDAI is a separate complaint from asking UIDAI to make the correction, and it is worth filing both where a centre has overcharged or turned you away.

The escalation ladder, level by level

Work through these in order. Every forum above asks what you did below, and skipping a rung is the commonest reason a complaint is sent back.

  1. 1
Aadhaar enrolment / update centreWait Same visit

The enrolment or update centre itself, for anything that can still be corrected on the spot.

The acknowledgement slip with the Enrolment ID (EID) or Update Request Number (URN). Check the slip before leaving — a spelling error caught at the counter is a five-minute fix and a six-week grievance otherwise.

  2. 2
UIDAI — 1947, help@uidai.gov.in, Grievance and FeedbackWait Not published as a single figure

UIDAI’s contact centre and grievance facility.

    1947 · help@uidai.gov.in

The EID or URN, the date of the visit, the centre, and exactly what is wrong — the field, the value recorded and the value it should be.

  3. 3
    UIDAI Regional OfficeWait Not published

The UIDAI regional office for your state, in writing.

The grievance reference from stage 2, the EID or URN, and what has not been done. UIDAI lists letter and post among its grievance channels.

  4. 4
Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring SystemWait 21 days, with an interim reply if longer; appeal within 30 days of disposal

CPGRAMS, in parallel rather than instead.

    pgportal.gov.in

The same facts with the UIDAI reference quoted, so the records point at each other.

How the process runs

  1. 1
Check the slip before you leave the centre

The acknowledgement slip carries the EID or URN and shows what was actually recorded. A spelling error caught at the counter is a five-minute fix.

then: if the update does not go through
  2. 2
    Raise it with UIDAI

Call 1947, email help@uidai.gov.in, or use the Grievance and Feedback facility on uidai.gov.in, quoting the EID or URN. Note the reference you are given.

then: check the status on the same facility
  3. 3
    File on CPGRAMS in parallel

This attaches a 21-day redress norm and a 30-day appeal window, neither of which the UIDAI route publishes. Quote the UIDAI reference.

    then: if still unresolved
  4. 4
Write to the UIDAI Regional Office

By registered post with acknowledgement due, quoting both references and stating the single correction sought.

What this system will not take up

Filing one of these wastes the whole period — it is closed on that ground alone.

  • Anything pending before a court.
  • Disputes with a bank, telecom operator or other entity that has used Aadhaar for authentication — those go to that entity and its own regulator.
  • A demand for compensation. UIDAI corrects records; it does not award damages.
  • Requests to link or delink Aadhaar with a third party’s service, which are that service provider’s process.

What to have ready before you complain

Assemble these first. A complaint that opens with the identifying numbers gets routed; one that opens with how long this has been going on gets a template reply.

  • The acknowledgement slip from the enrolment or update visit, carrying the EID or URN.
  • Your Aadhaar number, or the enrolment ID if Aadhaar has not been generated yet.
  • The exact field in dispute — name, date of birth, address, mobile, biometric — with the recorded value and the correct value.
  • The document you submitted as proof, which is usually what the rejection turns on.
  • The centre name and the date and time of the visit.
  • Any receipt for a fee paid, particularly where you were charged more than the prescribed amount.

Who runs this, and who is above it

Unique Identification Authority of India, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology

UIDAI is a statutory authority rather than a service company, and the enrolment centre you deal with is an operator working under an appointed agency rather than a UIDAI office. That distinction matters: a centre that refuses a correction or overcharges is not the last word, and reporting the centre to UIDAI is a different complaint from asking UIDAI to make the correction.

If they ignore you — where to go next

What each forum costs and what it needs before it will take your case.

The UIDAI grievance reference and the EID or URN. Gives you a 21-day norm and a 30-day appeal that UIDAI’s own route does not publish.

A one-page letter with the reference, the dates and the specific correction sought.

District Consumer Commission — e-JagritiNo fee where the consideration paid is up to ₹5 lakh

Only where a fee was paid for a service that was not delivered. A free statutory enrolment is not a consumer service in the ordinary sense.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UIDAI complaint number?

1947, toll-free. UIDAI publishes IVRS self-service as available around the clock, with contact centre executives available Monday to Saturday from 7am to 11pm and on Sunday from 8am to 5pm. Grievances can equally be sent to help@uidai.gov.in or lodged through the Grievance and Feedback facility on uidai.gov.in, which also lets you check the status afterwards.

How do I complain about an Aadhaar update that was rejected?

Quote the Update Request Number from the acknowledgement slip and state three things: the field, the value currently recorded, and the value it should be, with the document you submitted as proof. Rejections usually turn on the document rather than the request, so naming the document you gave is what makes the grievance actionable. File through 1947, help@uidai.gov.in or the Grievance and Feedback facility.

What if the enrolment centre charges more than the official fee?

Report it to UIDAI as a complaint about the centre, separately from any complaint about your own record. Aadhaar enrolment and update charges are prescribed, and the centre operator is not free to set its own price. Keep the receipt, or note the amount, the date and the centre name if no receipt was given — the absence of a receipt is itself worth reporting.

How long does a UIDAI grievance take?

UIDAI does not publish one redress period covering all grievance types, so there is no official figure to quote and we will not invent one. Note the date you filed and the reference you were given. Filing the same grievance on CPGRAMS in parallel gives you a period you can rely on — 21 days for redress with an interim reply if longer, and 30 days to appeal after disposal.

Can I complain to UIDAI about a bank that rejected my Aadhaar?

No. UIDAI is responsible for the Aadhaar record itself, not for how another entity chooses to use it. If a bank, telecom operator or service provider has refused to accept your Aadhaar or mishandled authentication, that is a complaint against that entity, through its own grievance officer and then its sector regulator — the RBI Ombudsman for a bank, for example.

Is complaining to UIDAI free?

Yes. Calling 1947, emailing help@uidai.gov.in, using the Grievance and Feedback facility and filing on CPGRAMS are all free. Note that some Aadhaar update services at a centre carry a prescribed fee — that is a service charge, not a complaint charge, and any demand for money to file or expedite a grievance should be treated as a warning sign.

Every contact detail on this page was read on an official page — primarily UIDAI — Unique Identification Authority of India. Government contact details change without notice. If something here is out of date, tell us and we will check it.

What we deliberately left blank (4)
  • A published redress period for UIDAI grievances — none was found covering all grievance types.
  • The prescribed enrolment and update fee amounts, which change and are set out in UIDAI circulars rather than on the contact page read.
  • Regional office addresses — UIDAI lists post as a channel but the office addresses were not read directly, so none is printed.
  • The UIDAI grievance FAQ page URL returned a 404 when checked directly; the channel details here come from UIDAI-attributed sources rather than a page we could open.
